Our annual York Sport Union Colours Ball awards dinner is the pinnacle event of the sporting year at The University of York. It is an evening to celebrate the fantastic achievements of the 67 different university sports clubs we have at York over the year and reward the students who have dedicated their time and efforts.

The University of York is a prestigious university, reigning champions of one of the largest inter-university varsity’s in Europe, top 45 in British Universities, Colleges Sports League, with 7 focus teams competing at a national level and 10 York Sport Union scholars.

This year will be the 20th anniversary of the York Sport Union Colours Awards, with all of the key bodies in Sport in attendance. The 2017/18 Colours Ball was held at one of the most beautiful venues in York, The Principal in the York City Centre.

Award Categories

This award recognises the club that has had an extraordinary successful sporting year, taking into account:

  • Outstanding sporting achievements

  • Increased participation and engagement

  • Promoting diversity and inclusivity

  • Fundraising for local and national charities and/ or local community involvement

This will be awarded to the individual team with the best overall performance for the academic year. This could include:

  • Outstanding sporting success at an event, tournament or competition

  • Contribution to overall BUCS points or medals

  • Consistent and sustained team performance throughout the academic year

  • Acceptional achievement in a league i.e. promotion

This award recognises the club that has had an extraordinary amount of success at Roses 2017:

  • All teams representing your club have demonstrated hard work, dedication and passion

  • The club has honoured the Respect the Rose Pledge  demonstrating fair play and good sportsmanship throughout Roses

  • The club as a whole have performed exceptionally throughout the weekend

The Most Improved Club Award recognises the club that have:

  • Commitment to improved performance

  • Improved professionalisation in all aspects of the club

  • Wider engagement in the local community

  • Increased participation and diversity within the university community

Sportsman of the Year will be awarded to the male or self-defined male that fulfills one or more of the criteria below:

  • A  motivated, dedicated and passionate team player

  • Consistent and exceptional performance throughout the year

  • Outstanding contribution to a major event, game or tournament

  • Represented their sport at a regional/national level

Sportswoman of the Year will be awarded to the female or self-defined female that fulfills one or more of the criteria below:

  • A motivated, dedicated and passionate team player

  • Consistent and exceptional performance throughout the year

  • Outstanding contribution to a major event, game or tournament

  • Represented their sport at a regional/national level

Most Improved Sportsperson of the Year will be awarded to the individual who has achieved one of more of the below:

  • Notable and consistent improvement in their standard of performance throughout the year

  • Has gone above and beyond to improve their individual performance in their sport

  • Improved their representational standing e.g. going from beginner to representing the team

The Coach of the Year will be awarded to the club/team coach who has:

  • Shown commitment and dedication to the club/ team(s) they coach

  • Lead a club/ team to sporting success

  • Promote and develop team work and an inclusive club ethos

  • Being a leader of positive change in the York Sport Union as a whole

This will be awarded to the individual who has:

  • Shown an outstanding commitment to a club(s) and/ or York Sport Union throughout their university experience

  • A passion to initiate and drive improvement and/ or development of their club or sport

  • Motivated to go above and beyond their role and responsibilities within a club, team or committee  

This award will recognise a student who has:

  • Raised awareness of a variety of sports throughout the academic year

  • Used an array of social media and other platforms to further engage a wider audience for sport at York

  • Increased sport journalism participation with a professional attitude

This award will be presented to the individual or club who have made a positive difference in promoting equality, inclusivity and diversity within sport at York.

This will be awarded on the grounds of one or some of the below:

  • Improve the accessibility of sport for allstudents

  • Make a specific club/ sporting activity at York more inclusive

  • Increase awareness of the barriers some students face when participating in Sport

  • Engagement and involvement with the new Equal Opportunities scheme

  • Creating a long-lasting, sustainable change

Charities change the lives of people in need and this award recognises the great fundraising contributions to charity by our sports clubs.

We will consider contributions of all variety and all are valuable to the strength of the nomination:

  • Financial Contribution

  • Effort to organise & fundraise

  • Impact (Include facts and figures where relevant)

This is awarded to an individual for meeting at least one or more of the following criteria:

  • Representing their sport at a national/international level.

  • Represented their club’s first team (or equivalent) for their whole three years at York

  • An outstanding contribution to the development and successes of their club

This is awarded to an individual for meeting at least one or more of the following criteria:

  • Representing their sport at a divisional/regional level

  • Represented their club’s second, third team or equivalent for their whole three years at York

  • A contribution to the development and successes of their club

Nominate


Who can submit a nomination?

Any student at the University of York, whether you are an undergraduate, postgraduate, full-time, part-time, distance learner, home or international student. Remember, you can submit multiple nominations.

Who can be nominated?

Committee members, Captains, Person/Club, Volunteers- any member of the York Sport Union at the University of York.

How to submit a nomination?

All you need to do is complete the nomination form with the name of the team mate you are nominating and a statement explaining why you think they deserve the award.
